Fall is when we plant various flowering bulbs for spring and early summer.
Today, I picked up some Allium.
I chose one of the larger sizes, 28-32 inches. Allium comes in a variety of heights and colors.
Allium is the Latin word for garlic.
In my area zone 9-10, I will plant the bulbs in October-November. Ideally you want the soil to cool off to the 60 degrees. They do not take a lot of water; good drainage is key. The bulbs are large, if there is too much water, they will rot.
Full sun is desired; they will come back year after year. After about three years, they will multiply.
When planting, the depth should be three times the width of the bulb. It’s important to be this deep; their height will allow them to flop over if not planted deep enough.
Easily available at local nurseries, there are numerous shops online they are easily shipped. I found my large Globemaster Allium (6 to 8 inches wide) at Roger’s Garden, the Gladiator Allium (up to 6 inches) I found at Home Depot.
